What’s That Smell Coming From My Drain?

If you notice that there is a strange or discomforting smell coming from your drain, you may have an issue with your plumbing. Indoor plumbing is an amazing feature that enables us to rid our homes of waste almost effortlessly. Unfortunately, drains are not always a one-way street. When an issue occurs with your indoor plumbing, it may cause materials and odors in the drain and sewage to accumulate and back-up. This can result in pressure issues, draining blocks, and uncomfortable odors.

3 Ways To Address Odors Coming From Your Drain

Clean Smelly Drains With Baking Soda And Vinegar or Run Some Water!

One of the most common issues that can occur with is due to the water trap drying out, and odors wafting up the pipe. All you have to do is clean smelly drains with baking soda and vinegar or run some water! The water trap is the u-shaped pipe located under the sink, which is designed that way so it can hold water at all times and act as a barrier from the materials further down the pipe. Simply run water for several seconds. This works for both sink drains and floor drains and can be an easy fix!

Time to Clean the Pipes!

If a dry water trap isn’t the problem, then it may be time to clean the pipes! Biofilm can buildup in drains connected to kitchen sinks or drains that pass food and other materials. Depending on the pipe, you can easily scrub this film away without jeopardizing the pipe. You will need a long pipe brush, a solution of 50/50 bleach-water, and a dirty drain. Run the solution down the drain and use the brush to scrub the slime away. This should help remove the film and deodorize the area. If this method doesn’t work, then you may need to call one of your friends at ACE! We will send a professional plumber to your home and help you quickly fix the problem.
