How To Fix A Busted Pipe

Step 1: Turn the Power & Water Off

The first and most important thing you can do if you have a busted pipe is turn off any power source or electrical component located near the broken pipe. As you know, electricity and water do not mix, so you want to be careful with this step. If your fuse box has any water damage near it, we do not suggest you attempt to turn off the electricity. Instead, call a professional who can safely handle the issue.

Step 2: Locate the Leak

Next, you want to locate the leaking pipe so that you can stop any water that is flowing towards it. In order to do this, you will have to locate something called the isolation valve, which is a small fixture on the pipe that has a stopper and dial. You will need a flathead screwdriver to turn the dial on the valve at least 90 degrees, which will internally block the pipe and stop the flow of water. Stop the leak and prevent excess flooding.

Step 3: Locate the Stopcock

You will need to know what the stopcock is on your plumbing system. The stopcock is the water valve that controls the entire water supply to your home. It is usually located under the kitchen sink, the hallway, or near the main water pipe attached to your home. Once you locate the stopcock, turn the handle clockwise. This should close off the water supply to your plumbing system. While you’re at it, be sure to turn off any water for your hot water heater or heating system (if you have radiators).

Step 4: Repair the Pipe

Repairing pipes is not that easy and requires specialized tools and know-how. If you’re familiar with cutting and soldering, you’ll need to cut out the damaged area of the pipe and then some before fitting a new piece. Depending on the type of pipe that has burst will require a different process. Your best bet is to call in an experienced and reputable plumbing company to make sure the repairs are done correctly.
